Orlando – warmes Klima, Freizeitparadies & Wildlife umhüllt von amerikanischem Großstadtflair. Das alles unter Palmen, mit dem nächsten Strand nur eine knappe Stunde Autofahrt entfernt. Orlando und die Umgebung bieten alles was ich mir für meinen ersten Besuch von Florida erhofft habe. Entertainment & Natur, das typische Amerika erleben, mit offenem Dach unter Palmen cruisen & den Vibe der amerikanischen Großstadt einsaugen. Orlando liegt in Zentralflorida und zählt jährlich etwa 66 Millionen Besucher. In Orlando selbst wohnen rund 300.000 Einwohner, während die gesamte Metropolregion (“Greater Orlando”) ca 2,2 Mio. Einwohner beheimatet. Die Stadt ist besonders bekannt für ihre zahlreichen Freizeitparks und dient als wunderbare Ausgangslage um Zentralflorida zu erkunden.
In diesem Beitrag erwartet euch ein Einblick in folgende Themen mit vielen Tipps und Erfahrungen meiner 5-tätigen Reise dorthin im Dezember 2023 um eure Zeit in Orlando unvergesslich zu machen & es euch zu ermöglichen in kurzer Zeit möglichst viele verschiedene Dinge zu erleben.

Wir haben fünf Nächte und vier ganze Tage in Orlando verbracht, im Anschluss ging es dann zum Strandurlaub nach Mexiko weiter. Orlando hat unglaublich viel zu bieten, sodass uns die vier Tage natürlich nur einen kleinen Einblick erlaubt haben. Folgende Aspekte waren uns für unseren kurzen Aufenthalt im Sunshine State wichtig:
1. Die typisch amerikanischen Dinge erleben. Target, Cheesecake Factory, Burger & XXL-Softdrinks, über den Highway cruisen zwischen aufgemotzten Pick-Ups und Hellcats. Ein amerikanisches Team beim NFL-Football anfeuern. Typisch amerikanische Wohnsiedlungen anschauen und kitschige Weihnachtsbeleuchtung an Privathäusern bewundern.
2. Entertainment & Bildung. Disneyworld, das Kennedy-Space-Center und der I-Drive (hierzu später mehr) waren für uns fest auf der Bucket List.
3. Natur & Strand. Wir wollten definitiv etwas von der Küste sehen, vielleicht ja sogar einen Alligator in freier Wildbahn?!
4. Orlando als Stadt kennenlernen. Abseits von Freizeitparks und Entertainment Meile war es uns wichtig ein Gefühl für das Stadtbild zu bekommen.
Viele Pläne für so wenig Zeit. Ich hätte leicht eine komplette Woche in und um Orlando verbringen können ohne dass Langeweile aufkommt. Dennoch haben wir fast jeden Aspekt unserer Bucketlist abhaken können und einen tollen Überblick über Orlando und die Umgebung gewonnen.
Transport
Einen Mietwagen halte ich für ein absolutes Must. Meine Freundin aus den Staaten hat sich oft bei mir beschwert, dass die gesamte Infrastruktur in den USA auf Autos ausgelegt ist und die Reise hat mir das auf jeden Fall bestätigt. Wir sind vier Tage mit einem Ford Mustang Cabrio durch Florida gecruist und viele der Autofahrten sind uns als richtige Highlights in Erinnerung geblieben. Mit offenem Dach und Blick auf blauen Himmel und die von Palmen gesäumten Straßen durch die Stadt zu fahren hat ein absolutes Gefühl von Freiheit vermittelt. Für vier Tage mit unbegrenzten Kilometern, Vollkasko und fairer Tankregelung haben wir bei Thrifty 290€ für den Wagen bezahlt (Abholung und Abgabe am Airport – Buchung über Check24). Folgende Aspekte sind wichtig zu berücksichtigen:
1. Maut
Bis auf wenige Ausnahmen sind alle Highways in Florida mautpflichtig. Dort, wo man die Mautstraßen umfahren kann muss man mit Zeit (& Sprit) bezahlen, die Umwege sind, besonders bei längeren Strecken in andere Teile Floridas teils doch groß und kosten viel Zeit. Innerhalb des Großraums Orlando haben wir eigentlich immer die mautfreien Straßen genutzt und hatten nicht den Eindruck hierdurch viel Zeit zu verlieren. Die Kosten variieren, in der Regel sind es ein paar Dollar, die man für die Straßen zahlt. Seit einiger Zeit gibt es kaum bis keine Mautstationen mehr an denen man bar oder mit Karte vor Ort bezahlen könnte. Die Erfassung des Fahrzeugs läuft komplett digital mittels Kameras (toll-by-plate) oder Transponder mit Prepaid-Mautpass (“Sunpass”) ab. Alle Einheimischen haben einen entsprechenden Pass im Auto.
Ihr solltet euch auf jeden Fall informieren, welche Optionen für euren Mietwagen bestehen. Viele Autovermietungen bieten euch den Sun-Pass oder ein gleichartiges Modell an & am Airport gibt es kleine Verkaufsstände die euch den Sunpass ebenfalls anbieten. Wir haben uns gegen einen Sun-Pass entschieden und somit wohl automatisch das Toll-by-plate Verfahren genutzt, welches von den meisten Vermietungen angeboten wird. Hierbei wird euer Kennzeichen bei Befahren der Mautstraße erfasst und die entsprechende Rechnung an die Vermietung geschickt, die euch diese dann weitergeben wird und hier i.d.R. noch eine ordentliche Bearbeitungsgebühr aufschlagen wird. Wir haben einmal versehentlich eine Toll Road benutzt (Gebühr der Straße: 0,5$) und mussten 9,99$ Servicegebühr zahlen. Das Geld wurde ein paar Wochen nach unserer Reise automatisch von unserer Kreditkarte abgebucht.
Informiert euch hier im Voraus welche Strecken/Straßen ihr nutzen möchtet & informiert euch bei eurer Autovermietung über die Optionen. Auf diesem Blog findet ihr wirklich alle wichtigen Infos rund um das Thema Maut.
Wir hatten im Vorfeld gar nicht so richtig gewusst dass das Thema Maut hier so groß ist & haben es dann einfach auf uns zukommen lassen. Wir haben Google Maps für die Navigation genutzt und die Einstellung “Mautstraßen vermeiden” aktiviert, was fast immer gut funktioniert hat. Habt die Verkehrsschilder aufmerksam im Blick, manchmal verläuft die Mautstraße direkt neben der kostenfreien Straße (hier kann man schneller fahren und vermeidet aufgrund dem geringeren Fahrzeugaufkommen Staus) und schaut euch vorab die Wege & Zeiten an.
2. Parken
Rechnet Parkgebühren unbedingt mit in euer Reisebudget ein! Auch wenn jedes Restaurant und jeder große Store etc. riesige, kostenfreie Parkflächen hat wird es teuer wenn ihr euer Auto unabhängig von Restaurants und Co. in der Innenstadt oder bei Attraktionen abstellen wollt. Auch Parks wie Disneyworld und das Kennedy-Space-Center lassen sich das Parken nochmal extra bezahlen (30$ Disneyworld, 10$ KSC). Auf der privaten Parkfläche vor dem Football-Stadion haben wir 30$ gezahlt, bei Parkflächen näher am Stadion stiegen die Preise im 10$ Takt bis auf 60$ an.
Unterkunft
Da wird spät am Abend gelandet sind, haben wir die erste Nacht in einem Airport Hotel verbracht. Tatsächlich haben wir diese Übernachtung erst unmittelbar nach der Landung spontan über Booking gebucht – dennoch hat alles reibungslos funktioniert. Wenn ihr in der Nähe des Airports übernachtet empfehle ich euch ein Hotel mit kostenfreiem Flughafentransfer zu buchen. Das ist einerseits komfortabel und spart euch zum anderen im Vergleich zu den Airport-Taxi-Preisen in den meisten Fällen einiges an Geld. Kalkuliert den Taxi/Transfer-Preis also unbedingt mit ein, wenn ihr Preise für Airport-Hotels vergleicht. Die ca. 20-minütige Fahrt vom Terminal zum Hotel hätte uns laut Uber 50$ gekostet. Nach einem schnellen Anruf kam auch schon zeitnah der Transfer, der uns dann am nächsten Morgen auch wieder zurück zum Airport gebracht hat, wo wir unseren Mietwagen in Empfang genommen haben.
Während unserer Zeit in Orlando haben wir in einem der Rosen Inn International Hotels gewohnt – genauer dem “Closest to Universal”. Das Hotel ist ein schlichtes 3* Hotel mit allem was man während einer Städtereise so benötigt. Wir haben uns hier wohlgefühlt und fanden die Lage am I-Drive klasse, um alles von dort aus gut und einfach zu erreichen. Das Hotel bietet, wie viele Hotels in der Umgebung, auch Transfers in die Universal Studios an – leider aber nicht ins Disneyland. Je nachdem in welchen der Parks ihr möchtet & wie viele Tage ihr dort verbringt, lohnt sich gegebenenfalls ein genauerer Blick auf die Transferoptionen des Hotels. Vom Hotel aus hätten wir fußläufig einige Lokale, Mini-Marts und Souvenirshops erreichen können, sodass man hier auch am Abend mal zu Fuß in der unmittelbaren Umgebung unterwegs sein könnte. Unser Zimmer war im 8. Stock und wir hatten einen tollen Blick auf das Orlando Eye sowie andere Fahrgeschäfte. Den Highway hinter dem Hotel hat man mit geschlossenem Fenster gar nicht gehört. Mit einem Preis von 262€ für vier Nächte hat das Preis-Leitungs-Verhältnis für uns absolut gestimmt und wir würden das Hotel weiterempfehlen.
Entertainment
Orlando ist ein absolutes Freizeitpark-Paradies und bietet neun verschiedene große Parks allein innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen. Laut der Stadt Orlando würde man 64 aufeinanderfolgende 8h Tage benötigen um alle Freizeitangebote umfassend zu besuchen und zu erleben.
Disneysworld
Sicherlich am bekanntesten ist Disneyworld Orlando (besteht aus vier Themenparks) und die Universal Studios. Beide Resorts nehmen eine riesige Fläche ein und haben viele eigene Hotels, Restaurants und sogar kleine “Innenstädte” mit Shops, Restaurants & Co.
Als riesiger Disneyfan war es schon seit ich klein bin mein Traum das Disneyschloss mal in echt zu sehen. Somit fiel die Entscheidung ohne großes Überlegen auf den Disney Magic Kingdom Park. Den “klassischsten Park” mit Schloss, Disneyparade und den klassischen Disney-Themenwelten. Die typische Disney Magie und Unbeschwertheit liegt hier definitiv in der Luft und der Moment an dem ich das Schloss in strahlendem Sonnenschein aus der Ferne erblickt hab war für mich wirklich magisch.
Tipps für Buchung und Anreise
Wir haben den Park im Dezember besucht und das Ticket einen Tag vorher online gebucht. Es gibt online einen Kalender, der zeigt für welchen Tag noch Tickets verfügbar sind und an welchen Tagen der Park bereits voll ist. In Ferienzeiten und rund um Feiertage sollte man sicherlich aufpassen und sich das Ticket besser schon vorab sichern. Google Maps führt einen im Mietwagen einfach und unkompliziert zu den Disney-Pforten, ab hier leiten die Schilder den Weg in den richtigen der vier Parks. Einige Hotels die nah an Disneyworld liegen bieten auch eigene Transfers zu den Parks an. Wir sind erst gegen späten Vormittag im Park angekommen und kamen ohne Warten rein. Wer direkt zur Parköffnung da sein möchte muss gegebenenfalls mit Wartezeiten und Chaos auf den Straßen vorm Park rechnen. Plant, wie bereits oben erwähnt, 30$ für das Parken ein. Der Parkplatz ist noch immer ein gutes Stück vom eigentlichen Park entfernt. Eine kleine Bimmelbahn bringt einen von der Parkfläche zum Sammelpunkt (je nachdem wie weit hinten man parkt kann man auch laufen). Ab diesem Sammelpunkt hat man zwei Optionen: man setzt mit dem Schiff über einen kleinen See und legt vor den Eintrittstoren des Parks an. Alternativ kann man den Skytrain nutzen, der etwas schneller aber dafür auch weniger romantisch ist. Wir haben hin das Schiff genommen (toller Ausblick in die Natur und Blick auf vereinzelte Disney-Resort-Hotels). Zurück war es bereits dunkel und wir haben uns für den Skytrain entschieden. Nun ist man endlich am Eingang angekommen. Hier zeigt man sein Ticket an der Kasse vor und erhält seine physische Eintrittskarte in EC-Karten Form mit süßem Disney-Motiv. Tipp: die Parkflächen sind mit Disney-Charakteren benannt, merkt euch beim Einstieg in die Bimmelbahn unbedingt wo ihr parkt oder droppt eine Nadel auf Maps!
Unsere Erfahrung im Park:
Wir hatten einen wunderschönen, magischen Tag im Park und haben es genossen bei strahlendem Sonnenschein durch die liebevoll angelegten Welten zu schlendern, die Disney-Parade anzusehen und in unsere Kindheit zurückversetzt zu werden & den Tag mit dem wundervollen Feuerwerk über dem Disneyschloss ausklingen zu lassen. Was für uns weniger positiv war, waren die unglaublichen Wartezeiten vor den Fahrgeschäften. Ich habe schon oft und viele Freizeitparks in Deutschland besucht und kenne das Thema “Anstehen”, aber selbst beim einfachsten kleinen Karussell musste man hier mindestens eine Stunde warten. Kommt auch definitiv mit der richtigen Erwartung was den Action-Faktor der Fahrgeschäfte angeht. Die Fahrten sind wirklich eher gemütlich & auf Kinder ausgerichtet, sodass ihr hier keinen Adrenalin-Kick erwarten dürft. Seid ihr eher auf der Suche nach wilden Achterbahnen seid ihr hier auf jeden Fall falsch. Selbst beim Starbucks im Park war die Schlange sobald es am späten Nachmittag kühl und dunkel wurde 40 Minuten lang!
Tipps & Insights für den Tag im Park:
Ich empfehle euch die Disney-App herunterzuladen. Wir haben hier besonders die interaktive Karte des Parks genutzt (Navigation & Überblick zu den Anstehzeiten der Fahrgeschäfte). Zudem gibt es hier seit einiger Zeit die “Virtual Queue” Funktion, mit der ihr euch zum Beispiel für die Tron anstellt. Zwei mal am Tag (7h & 13h – kann je nach Saison variieren) öffnet hier für einige Minuten die virtuelle Schlange in der man sich anmeldet. Man erhält eine “Boardinggruppe” und wird mittels Push-Benachrichtigung informiert wenn man an der Reihe ist. Dann hat man einen 1h Slot um zum Fahrgeschäft zu kommen und die Fahrt anzutreten. Das Prinzip ist wirklich toll, mit der Umsetzung war ich leider nicht so happy. Ich habe mich und meinen Freund um 13h für den zweiten Slot angestellt. Unsere Push-Benachrichtigung kam gegen 21 Uhr, als wir schon längst wieder auf dem Heimweg waren. Es gibt leider nicht die Möglichkeit, sich ganz normal anzustellen, sodass wir dieses Fahrgeschäft leider verpasst haben. Stellt euch also am besten schon im ersten Slot an, außer ihr plant eh bis Parkschließung zu bleiben.
Positioniert euch rechtzeitig für das Feuerwerk! Obwohl es online viele Geheimtipps rund um Locations gibt, von denen man das Feuerwerk bewundern kann haben wir uns im Hauptbereich, auf dem Main Square am Ende der Main Street aufgestellt & ich hätte mir keine bessere Aussicht auf das Spektakel vorstellen können. Wir waren circa eine Stunde vor Beginn dort. Der Bereich wird in einzelne Blöcke eingeteilt, hierfür werden Markierungen auf dem Boden angebracht. Mein Tipp: versucht einen Platz ganz vorne in einem der Blöcke zu bekommen, so habt ihr eine tolle Sicht und vor allem wenig Gedrängel. Die Blöcke werden von vorne (vom Schloss) nach hinten (Main Street) von Einweisern “gefüllt” und dann auch konsequent abgesperrt. Da die meisten Besucher ihren Besuch im Park mit dem Feuerwerk abschließen stellt euch auf Wartezeiten auf dem Rückweg zum Parkplatz ein. Ihr habt hier wieder die Option die Fähre oder die Bahn zu nehmen und werdet von Einweisern in die richtige Schlange gewiesen.
Im Park gibt es einige Restaurants. Wir haben uns in erster Linie mit Essen von verschiedenen Ständen im Park versorgt, insofern kann ich hier leider keine Erfahrung aus erster Hand teilen, habe aber gelesen, dass es unverzichtbar ist in den Restaurants zu reservieren. Bei der Menge an Menschen im Park kann ich mir auch nicht vorstellen, dass man zu den Hauptessenszeiten spontan einen Tisch bekommen hätte.
Wir haben circa acht Stunden im Park verbracht. Sicherlich kann man aber gerade im Frühjahr und Sommer auch noch länger im Park verweilen – man sollte auch mehr Zeit einplanen wenn man viele Fahrgeschäfte mitnehmen möchte.
Kennedy Space Center
Ein absolutes Must war für uns ein Besuch des Weltraumflughafens am Cape Canaveral. Das Gelände ist eins von zehn NASA Space Centern und liegt etwa 100km östlich von Orlando auf Merritt Island. Das Gelände ist riesig groß und ein großer Teil der umgebenden Landschaft in die sich die Launchpads einfügen ist Naturschutzegebiet. Das Visitor Center des KSC kann man sich ein bisschen wie einen eigenen Freizeitpark vorstellen, nur eben auf einem realen Gelände, an dem ganz normaler Betrieb mit Starts, Landungen (z.B. Space X’s Falcon 9) und Forschung stattfinden. Ich würde euch empfehlen für den Besuch auf jeden Fall einen ganzen Tag einzuplanen. Wir sind am Tag unseres Besuchs leider erst etwas später losgekommen und hätten noch ein paar Stunden mehr gebrauchen können. Für das Tagesticket (Standard) haben wir 75$ bezahlt und dieses am Abend zuvor direkt auf der Seite des KSC gebucht.
Durch einen ziemlich großen Verfahrer haben wir leider auch bei der Anfahrt noch etwas Zeit verloren. Damit euch nicht dasselbe passiert hier unser Learning. Wir sicherlich die meisten hier nutzen wir für die Navigation Google Maps & haben ohne drüber nachzudenken “Kennedy Space Center” als Ziel gesetzt. Völlig fasziniert von der Natur haben wir uns Merrit Island genähert und kamen aus dem Staunen nicht raus. Man lässt die großen Straßen und besiedelten Ortschaften hinter sich und die Kulisse ändert sich in ewig weite Seen, die am Horizont in das blau des Himmels verlaufen, überall beobachtet man verschiedenste Vögel in der Luft und auf dem Wasser. Die Seen werden zu kleineren sumpfartigen Wasserströmen, die sich mit exotischen Wäldern und Mangroven abwechseln. Man kann die Gators und Schlangen wittern & bekommt Lust tiefer in diese exotische Wildnis einzudringen. Wir haben uns schon gefragt ob uns hier wirklich das KSC erwarten wird, besonders da so wenig Verkehr auf der Strecke war. Irgendwann kamen wir dann an einer Sackgasse an, einem sehr offiziell aussehenden Eingang zum staatlichen NASA Gelände, mit einem Pförtnertor & sehr vielen Warnschildern die vor unbefugtem Eindringen auf das Gelände warnen. Ehe wir uns versahen standen wir auch schon mit offenem Fenster vorm Pförtnerhaus, der uns freundlich aber bestimmt erklärt hat, dass wir hier völlig falsch sind. Ganz offensichtlich waren wir jedoch nicht die ersten & sicher nicht die letzten – denn er hat uns direkt eine ausgedruckte Wegbeschreibung zum Besuchereingang in die Hand gedrückt. Nach weiteren 40min zurück kamen wir dann am richtigen Eingang ein. Auch hier fasziniert die Landschaft und man erwartet nicht, dass in dieser Idylle die größten Raketen der Welt abgeschossen werden und hier Geschichte der Menschheit geschrieben wird. Solltet ihr am KSC Tag genug Zeit mitbringen empfehlen wir euch jedoch von Herzen den Umweg in Richtung Forschungsgelände zu nehmen und euch die wunderschöne Natur anzusehen. Auf etwa der Hälfte der Strecke gibt es Parkplätze von denen aus verschiedene Wanderwege starten – sicherlich lohnt es sich auch am Wasser einfach zu halten und die Ruhe zu genießen (der Sonnenuntergang muss hier wundervoll sein). Wir haben dem Umweg also keinesfalls bereut sondern sind ganz im Gegenteil froh unerwartet noch so eine tolle Scenic Route abgefahren zu haben.
Rechnet in euer Budget für den Tag auch hier wieder Gebühr für das Parken ein (10$ für den gesamten Tag). Wir sind den Tag mit der inkludierten Bustour gestartet, die euch vorbei an der Assembly Hall zur Saturn V Rakete und der zugehörigen Ausstellungshalle Apollo/Saturn V bringt. In jeder Ausstellungshalle werdet ihr total toll durch die Inhalte geführt, es gibt interaktive Elemente & zum Teil auch inkludierte Führungen durch die Bereiche. Der Außenbereich bei der Saturn beheimatet Tribünen mit Blick auf die Launchpads in der Ferne – ein wirklich spektakulärer Gedanke von hier einen Raketenstart zu bezeugen & auch ein toller Ort um draußen eine kleine Pause mit Picknick in der Sonne zu machen. Nach einiger Zeit bei Saturn V sind wir mit dem Bus wieder zurück zum Hauptbereich gefahren. Hier erwarten euch weitere Abenteuer – die zweite große Attraktion ist hier sicherlich das Space Shuttle Atlantis. Das Shuttle ist in eine wahnsinnig beeindruckende immersive Erfahrung eingebaut & lässt einem wirklich die Kinnlade runterfallen. Auch diese Ausstellung ist mit zahlreichen interaktiven Abschnitten gefüllt. Im unteren Bereich befindet sich eine Ausstellung, die sich den zwei verunglückten Space-Shuttlen Challenger & Columbia und deren Besatzung widmet. Hier werden Hintergründe der Unglücke und deren Auswirkungen auf die Raumfahrt dargestellt. Auch die Leben der verunglückten Besatzungsmitgliedern werden hier näher beleuchtet, was diesen Part der Ausstellung wirklich sehr emotional & berührend macht.
i-Drive
Der international drive ist Orlando’s Entertainment-Meile. Die 18,5 km lange Straße ist gesäumt von Restaurants, Shopping-Möglichkeiten (Outlets, Supermärkte und Co.), Entertainment-Venues (Schießstand, kleine Achterbahnen & Parks) und liegt unweit der großen Amusement Parks. Die Gegend ist sehr belebt und in unseren Augen ein guter Ausgangspunkt für die Zeit in Orlando, weswegen wir auch unser Hotel hier gewählt haben – dazu mehr im Abschnitt Unterkunft.
Typisch Amerika – dieser Aspekt unserer Bucketlist war der Wunsch, ein paar der typisch amerikanischen Dinge zu erleben (sicher auch Klichees). Somit zog es uns natürlich zu Target und in typische Frühstückslokale, zur Cheesecake Factory, zu einem NFL-Game und in einen großen Jagd-/Outdoor-Store. Auf diesem Blog hatte ich über die besonders großen “Super-Targets” und den Bass Pro Shop gelesen. Im Target haben wir sicherlich 1,5h verbracht. Ich habe ohnehin einen Faible für ausländische Supermärkte – und Target ist ein Traum mit einer Auswahl, gegen die ein Kaufland oder Globus blöd aussieht. Das Amerika die Definition von “Convenience” neu schreibt zeigen bereits fertig gekochte und gepellte Eier, bereits angerührter Pancake Mix in verschiedensten Geschmacksrichtungen, Eigelb und Eiweiß in seperaten Containern oder tiefgekühlte Waffeln in jeder Variation. Nach 1 Liter Flaschen sucht man hier vergeblich, an einen kleinen 200ml Eiskaffee ist nichtmal zu denken. Mich hat es wahnsinnig fasziniert, die Konsumgewohnheiten und die anderen Marken und die Vielfalt zu sehen. Auch die Deko- sowie Modeabteilung hat einiges zu bieten sodass man hier in meinen Augen eine Shopping-Experience auf allen Ebenen finden kann und hierfür definitiv ein bis zwei Stunden einplanen kann (sofern man sich für sowas begeistern kann versteht sich). Ein wahres Erlebnis war für uns der Bass Pro Shop. Sicherlich ein Traum vieler Männer – bietet dieser Store ALLES an Outdoor-Equipment was man sich vorstellen kann und noch mehr. Der Store ist wirklich super aufgemacht & man fühlt sich als würde man gerade zurück von Jagd/Fischen in sein Blockhouse in der amerikanischen Wildnis zurückgekehrt sein. Für mich erschreckend war hier die Waffen- und Munitionsabteilung. Munition steht hier in patriotisch amerikanischen Verpackungen in Massen im Regal, daneben finden sich Waffenaufbewahrungsboxen für die Montage im Auto & Schilder für die Garage/Zaun mit sehr eindeutigen Messages.
Kulinarisch haben wir einfach dort gegessen, wo es lecker aussah und wo wir gerade Lust drauf hatten. Sehr gut gefallen hat uns die Cheesecake Factory, eine große Kette in ganz USA (wahnsinnig lecker, große Auswahl, tolles Lokal in “Winter Park”). Klassisch amerikanisches Frühstück hatten wir bei iHop & besonders gut gefallen hat uns die Kette Bagels Bros – hier könnt ihr euch Bagel in allen Geschmacksrichtungen und Kombis zusammenstellen, die ihr euch erträumen könntet.
Ein wahres weiteres Highlight unserer Zeit dort war das Football Game der Jacksonville Jaguars gegen die Cincinnati Bengals. Wir hatten recht kurzfristig einige Wochen vor Abreise die Tickets online gekauft. Ich persönlich kenne mich mit Football weniger gut aus, schaue aber hier und da mal die Übertragung der Spiele mit meinem Freund. Nach unserem Roadtrip die Küste hoch Richtung Jacksonville kamen wir etwa zwei Stunden vorm Kick-Off am Stadion an. Rund um das Stadion stehen viele private Parkflächen zur Verfügung. Je näher am Stadion, desto teurer. Wir waren etwa 25 Gehminuten vom Stadion entfernt und haben 30$ für den Abend bezahlt. Dafür war der Platz überwacht & es gab Dixi-Toiletten. Solltet ihr euch ein Game ansehen empfehle ich euch: seid einige Stunden vorab da. Die Zeit vor den Spielen ist bekannt für das Tailgating – viele kleinere oder auch größere Parties auf den Parkplätzen rund um das Stadion. Die Ladeflächen der Pick-Ups werden in riesige Barbeque-Stationen verwandet, es wird Bier getrunken, laut Musik gemacht & ein paar Pässe hin- und hergeworfen. An den Straßen gibt es kleine Stände mit Essen und Merch und an zwei Ecken, die wir passiert sind spielten Live-Bands & es gab größere Food-Trucks. Die Stimmung ist total ausgelassen & wirklich besonders – ein originelles amerikanisches Erlebnis. Das Football-Game selbst ist auch eine riesige Feier – rund um das Stadion gibt es lauter Stände mit Essen, Werbegeschenken und Merch – die Cheerleader-Teams stehen für Fotos bereit & man konnte sogar in einer kleineren Trainingshalle Football spielen. Spätestens wenn das ganze Stadion für die Nationalhymne aufsteht und das Spiel mit XXL-Feuerwerk beginnt ist man wirklich wie im Film. Jeder Touchdown wird begleitet von weiterem Feuerwerk & die Stimmung im Stadion ist üb er die gegnerischen Fans sehr freundschaftlich. Wir saßen sehr weit oben in der Ecke des offenen Stadions & auch wenn der Ball kaum zu sehen war, fand ich die Plätze doch optimal um das gesamte Geschehen zu überblicken und dennoch mitten drin zu sein.
Strand
An Tag zwei hatten wir am Abend Tickets für das NFL Game in Jacksonville. Das haben wir zum Anlass genommen an diesem Tag einen Roadtrip in Richtung Norden zu unternehmen. Die Optionen auf dem Weg Richtung Norden sind vielfältig. Wir haben entschieden uns einfach mal etwas treiben zu lassen und sind so in Daytona Beach gelandet, wo wir etwas Zeit an Strand und Promenade verbracht haben. Spannend war hier vor allem der Blick auf die Autos, die in der Ferne direkt am Strand geparkt haben & die gesonderte Autozufahrt auf den Sandstrand. Daytona Beach ist bekannt dafür, sehr festen Sand zu haben, den man einfach auch mit einem Auto ohne Allrad befahren kann.
Ich muss ehrlich sagen, dass mich der Ort selbst nicht so überzeugt hat, die Straßen rund um die Strandpromenade waren gesäumt von eher abgerockten Souvenirshops & auch die Lokale wirkten weniger einladend. Möglicherweise wurde uns hier aber auch ein anderes Bild vermittelt, als man es in der Hauptsaison vorfinden würde & letztlich haben wir auch nur einen kleinen Teil der Stadt gesehen. Daytona ist besonders bekannt für die Rennstrecke und ich kann mir vorstellen, dass der Ort in der Hauptsaison aufblüht. Von Daytona Beach aus sind wir noch für circa eine Stunde die Florida State Road A1A am Wasser entlanggefahren, bevor es wieder auf die Interstate 95 Richtung Jacksonville ging. Die Fahrt war wirklich schön und wir sind an tollen Villen, kleineren Beachhäusern und vielen weiten Dünen vorbeigekommen. In Nachgang wurde uns noch häufig St. Augustine empfohlen – eine Stadt im spanischem Kolonialstil etwas weiter nördlich – die wohl mit sehr viel Flair und Charakter punktet. Wir haben es auf der Reise leider nicht mehr geschafft hier anzuhalten – die Stadt soll aber sehr lohnenswert sein.
Orlando als Stadt
Abseits all der Entertainment Optionen wollten wir gerne auch Orlando selbst kennen lernen, also abseits des i-Drive und der Parks. Hierfür haben wir zunächst Lake Eola angesteuert. Der See in Downton ist ein Treffpunkt für Locals und bietet eine Ruheoase in der Stadt. Rund um den See gibt es einen Rundweg & viele Restaurants und Bars, die zum Verweilen mit Blick auf das Wasser einladen. Wir waren am Sonntag hier, wöchentlich findet hier auch ein Farmers Market und kleiner Street-Food Markt statt. Da wird im Dezember da waren, war der Weg rund um den See weihnachtlich dekoriert und überall lief Weihnachtsmusik. Palmen waren in Lichterketten eingewickelt und glitzernde Weihnachtselemente zierten die Wiesen rund um den Weg. Wirklich liebevoll aufgemacht & definitiv sehenswert.
Ebenfalls besucht haben wir das chice Stadtviertel Winter Park. Winter Park liegt im Nordosten Orlando’s auf einer Seenplatte und hat uns wirklich begeistert. Die Gegend ist eher gehoben, mit vielen tollen Häusern und chicen Restaurants. Besonders gut gefallen hat mir, dass es hier sogar eine kleine Fußgängerzone gibt und der Stadtteil “walkable” ist, was man in den USA wirklich nicht an jeder Ecke findet. Man kann tatsächlich wirklich richtig schön durch die Straßen schlendern und sich von Botiquen über kleine Cafés hinüber in extravagante inhabergeführte Restaurants treiben lassen. Wir haben hier in der Cheesecake Factory gegessen und uns danach abends noch etwas durch die Straßen treiben lassen. Mit mehr Zeit hätten wir Winter Park gerne ausgiebiger und am Tag weiter erkundet – was wir gesehen haben reicht jedoch um euch den Stadtteil ans Herz zu legen. Wenn ihr wie wir neugierig seid, wie gehobene, amerikanische Wohnsiedlungen aussehen fahrt hier unbedingt mal durch die Straßen und bewundert die Villen. Wir hatten Glück und konnten hier sogar noch die Weihnachtsbeleuchtung der Häuser bewundern, die tatsächlich genau wie in den Filmen aussieht, mal super kitschig und bunt, mal richtig stilvoll – aber immer irgendwie faszinierend.

Fazit
Wir fanden die Zeit in Orlando wirklich richtig perfekt & haben hierdurch einen wunderbaren Einblick in den Staat & einige kulturelle Aspekte erhalten. Wir hatten auch das Gefühl, dass man in Orlando und Umgebung sehr authentische Ecken finden konnte & es abgesehen von den Parks zu dieser Jahreszeit auch nicht zu touristisch überlaufen war. Wer einen Mix aus amerikanischer Großstadt, Entertainment & Natur sucht ist in Orlando und Umgebung wirklich wunderbar aufgehoben.
